Background

Clinical trial industry and traditional Chinese medicine are two highly potential fields in the near future. In Taiwan, the Executive Yuan Biotech Management Committee had started a five-year plan for Chinese herb development since 1999.

In order to establish environments for clinical trials for Chinese herbs, the Committee on Chinese Medicine & Pharmacy (CCMP) aimed to use scientific methods to evaluate their effects, proving the validity of traditional assertions and clarifying opposing claims. By the end of 2003, the CCMP had set up 9 clinical trial centers for Chinese medicine, including China Medical University Hospital, Tri-Service General Hospital, Taipei Veteran¡¦s Central Hospital, Chang-Gung Memorial Hospital, National Taiwan University Hospital, Taichung Veterans General Hospital, Chi-Mei Medicine Center, and Show-Chwan Memorial Hospital. In 2004, three additional clinical trial centers for Chinese medicine will be set up, including Kaoshiung Medical University, Tao-Yuan General Hospital of Department of Health, and Chung Shan Medical University Hospital.

Ongoing trials

Two clinical trials on traditional Chinese medicine formulas for the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis are ongoing by Dr James Cheng-Chung Wei. A ftial for one new anti- CD2 biologics, alefacept for psoriasis is now being prepared. At the same time, we hope to attract more early-phase international clinical trials to Taiwan, and to build Taiwan as the General Clinical Research Center in the Asia Pacific Region.
